Business appraisal FAQs
What business owners ask us before ordering an appraisal.
How much does a business appraisal cost?
A Benchmark business appraisal starts from $2,000 plus GST. It is a fixed fee, quoted before any work begins, so you know the cost up front. The fee depends on the size and complexity of the business.
How long does a business appraisal take?
Most appraisals are ready within a few days of us receiving your information. A certified business valuation takes around 4 weeks, because it involves a full analysis of the trading history and balance sheet.
What is the difference between a business appraisal and a business valuation?
An appraisal estimates what a business is likely to sell for in the current market, based on recent trading and comparable sales. A valuation is a far more thorough process that analyses the full trading history and balance sheet and tests earnings against market evidence, and only a qualified business valuer can prepare one.
What information do I need to provide?
Usually your recent profit and loss statements, a copy of the lease, staff details and a list of equipment and other assets. The more you provide, the more accurate the price guide.
Can I use an appraisal for tax, finance or a legal matter?
No. An appraisal is an indicative guide and is not a certified report, so it should not be relied on for tax, finance or court purposes. For capital gains tax, transfer duty, finance, family law or a partnership dispute you need a certified business valuation, from $4,000 plus GST.
Am I committing to sell by getting an appraisal?
No. An appraisal simply tells you where you stand. Many owners get one well before they are ready to sell, so they can plan their exit and work on what would lift the value.
Is my appraisal confidential?
Yes. Your information is only shared with your consent, and all documents and discussions remain secure and private.
Do you appraise businesses outside the capital cities?
Yes. With 8 offices across Australia we appraise metropolitan and regional businesses, and regional businesses are assessed against regional sales evidence.
